Caffeine can only be harmful if you seriously exceed the daily recommended amount. But if you have blood pressure disorders or suffer from insomnia, you should only consume the brown drink in small quantities.

So be careful! It is often forgotten that not only coffee contains caffeine. Cola and energy drinks are other well-known drinks that also include stimulants. But there is also caffeine in chocolate and chewing gum!

To improve the taste and color, the cocoa beans undergo a drying and fermentation process. The amount of caffeine per pill varies with the type of beans and the degree of fermentation.

Cocoa powder

Cocoa powder contains caffeine. Depending on the degree of fermentation and bean type, the caffeine ratio is between 0.1 and 0.5%. Cocoa powder, made with generally fermented African beans, contains little caffeine: 0.1% or less.

Cocoa Butter

Kiefer & Martin conducted a study on the amounts of caffeine and theobromine in chocolate products. The researchers found very small amounts of theobromine (0.008%) and caffeine (0.038%) in cocoa butter.

Does white chocolate have caffeine,

White chocolate is different from normal chocolate in that it is made from cocoa butter without adding cocoa powder. It also includes milk solids, sugar, and spices (usually vanilla ). Cocoa butter is what keeps chocolate solid at room temperature and quickly melts in the mouth, so white chocolate and chocolate have the same texture but differ in taste. Unlike other chocolates, it does not contain caffeine.

Because white chocolate does not contain cocoa butter, many countries do not recognize it as qualifying as chocolate. Previously, a temporary license was required to sell this chocolate. Similar requirements for access must include at least 20% cocoa butter and 14% dairy products.

Some so-called white chocolates are made from vegetable oils. Vegetable oils are made of pure white, while cocoa butter is made of ivory.

The cocoa bean with which chocolate is prepared has between 0.1 and 0.7% caffeine.

In the shell of the seed there is also caffeine but in amounts between 0.05 and 0.3%.

The caffeine content of chocolate is low, considering that it is not made with pure cocoa, but with a mixture of its derivatives.

Commercial Chocolate Caffeine Content

The fat content of cocoa beans is around 54% of the total calories and this fat is called cocoa butter, which does not contain caffeine.

The non-fat part of the seeds is known as cocoa solids, which is the portion of the beans that contain caffeine.

Dark chocolate contains a higher percentage of solids. Milk chocolate has a lower percentage and white chocolate does not have caffeine.

Dark chocolate

It has the highest percentage of cocoa solids of all chocolates, which is why it has more caffeine.

Regularly, it is prepared from cocoa beans, adding sugar or artificial sweeteners, cocoa butter, vanilla, salt or lecithin.

A typical dark chocolate recipe is prepared with:

  • 39% cocoa beans.
  • 48% sugar.
  • 13% cocoa butter.
  • <1% lecithin.
  • <1% vanilla.

To avoid confusion in the name of the chocolate, on whether it is sweet or semi-sweet, the percentage of cocoa is placed on the label.

To calculate the caffeine that contains 1 kg of chocolate, we will use the following considerations:

  • Approximately 10% of cocoa butter is added to the dark chocolate.
  • Chocolate called semi-sweet with 43% chocolate, is equivalent to 706 mg of caffeine / kg.
  • The semi-sweet with 50% chocolate is equivalent to 906 mg of caffeine/kg.
  • Dark chocolate with 60% chocolate is equivalent to 1088 mg of caffeine/kg.
  • Bitter with 70% chocolate is equivalent to 1270 mg of caffeine / kg.
  • Bitter with 80% chocolate is equivalent to 1450 mg of caffeine / kg.
  • Bitter with 90% chocolate is equivalent to 1632 mg of caffeine / kg.
  • Bitter with 100% chocolate is equivalent to 1614 mg of caffeine / kg.

Hardly a person can consume 1 kg of chocolate at once, therefore, it can be affirmed that the amount of caffeine would never equal that of a cup of coffee, around 200 mg.

Milk chocolate

Milk chocolate has smaller amounts of caffeine, about 200 mg/kg. What would practically be the caffeine content of a cup of coffee, but in an immense amount of chocolate.

It is not an easy task to quantify the caffeine in milk chocolate since the recipe varies greatly.

A typical recipe contains:

16% cocoa beans.

16% complete milk powder.

38% sugar.

30% cocoa butter.

<1% lecithin.

<1% vanilla.

White chocolate

A common recipe for white chocolate carries the following:

27% cocoa butter.

48% sugar.

25% complete milk powder.

<1% lecithin.

<1% vanilla.

As we can see, cocoa bean solids are not used. The solid portions are removed by filtration and exposure of the melted cocoa butter to the steam, leaving only the natural fat of the bean.

Since white chocolate does not contain solid cocoa and only the fat of the fruit, the flavor is completely different. So it can be said that it is not a bar of chocolate but rather a sweet.

If the chocolate contains a higher amount of cocoa solids, that is, cocoa paste, it will also have more energy, fats, saturated fats, fiber, magnesium, caffeine, flavonoids, tryptophan, and anandamide. Rather, it will contain less sugar and calcium. For its part, white or milk chocolate has more sugar and calcium, and less protein, saturated fat, fiber, and energy.

According to a report from the Organization of  (OCU), 100 grams of dark chocolate 70-85% cocoa has 598 kcal of energy, 7.79 grams of protein, 42.63 grams of fat, 24.5 grams of saturated fat, 45.9 grams of carbohydrates, 23.99 grams of sugars, 10.9 grams of fiber and 80 milligrams of caffeine, while 100 grams of white chocolate contains 539 kcal of energy, 5.87 grams of protein, 39.09 grams of fat, 19.4 grams of saturated fat, 59.24 grams of carbohydrates, 59 grams of sugars, 0.2 grams of fiber and 0 milligrams of caffeine.

The stimulating effect

The stimulating effect of chocolate would be one of the real benefits, because it contains caffeine and theobromine, substances that stimulate the central nervous system, making the consumer feel more energetic temporarily, causing nervousness and tachycardia if its consumption is excessive.
